The Laughing Cavalier, painted in 1624 is perhaps the most famous painting by the Dutch Baroque artist Frans Hals.
The title of the piece was actually invented during the victorian period as a joke. It is actually just called 'Portrait of a Young Man' The text in the top right of the picture tells us that the young man whose portrait is being taken is 26 years old and also when the picture was painted. The painting is currently held in 'The Wallace Collection' in London.
The canvas measures 83 × 67.3 cm
The next picture, the thumbnail on the right hand side, of the young woman with the white collar is another well-known favourite:
